COLCHESTER, Vt.– Sophomore pitcher Alana Wesche threw her first career no-hitter on Monday afternoon, as the University of New Haven softball team continued its hot streak and completed a two-game sweep of the Purple Knights at Doc Jacobs Field on the campus of Saint Michael’s College. Wesche led the Chargers to an 8-0 decision in game one, followed by a 13-3 thrashing in the nightcap.
With the sweep, New Haven has now won eight of its last nine game and improved to 26-13, 16-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Purple Knights dropped to 5-27, 3-19 in league competition.
Game One
Wesche was tremendous in the first game of the doubleheader, as the Oxford, Conn. native was one out away from tossing a perfect game. The only opposing batter to reach base for the Purple Knights came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Brittany Regis made it down to first on a Charger mishap in the field. The next batter, Greer Lemnah, grounded out to end the game, granting Wesche a no-hitter for the triumph. She struck out three of the 19 batters she faced and collected her 11th win of the campaign.
Leading the Chargers offensively was senior Courtney Garland, who homered, doubled, drove in three runs and scored another. Last week’s NE-10 Player of the Week, Christina Gelardi, stayed hot and added two hits, including her fourth homerun, and drove in a pair. Senior Chelsea Harold singled three times and stole a base, giving her a team-leading 23 on the season.
New Haven totaled 13 hits on the afternoon, including four that went for extra bases. Stephanie Frank was on the losing end for the Purple Knights.
Game Two
After falling behind 3-1 in the second game, the Chargers’ offense came back to life and exploded for seven runs in the third inning. UNH added two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to enforce the mercy rule for its conference leading 26th victory.
Four members of the Chargers’ squad tallied multiple hits in the game. Gelardi added three more to her day, including two RBI and four runs scored, Harold finished 2-for-4 with two runs, Fisher went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run and Allison Vaughan finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and crossed the dish once. Lindsey Couturior and Brandy Dianno collected the last two hits for the Chargers.
Kelsey Molloy started for New Haven in the circle and was relieved by Micah Stonesifer. The duo combined for five innings of work, allowing four hits and just two earned runs. Stonesifer was rewarded with the win and struck out five Purple Knights in the process.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow, April 26 with a cross-town showdown against Southern Connecticut State University. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
