BOX SCORE Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Led by the pitching of senior duo Matt Sommo and Mitch Rossi, the University of New Haven baseball team defeated Assumption College 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. Senior closer Mitch Rossi collected his 32nd career save in the win and tied the NCAA Division II record in the appearance. The Chargers improved to 20-14 overall and 8-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. Assumption fell to 12-25 overall and 6-12 in conference play.

The games first run came in the bottom of the second inning. Jack Heary hit a one-out single to left center. The sophomore then stole second base and was driven in off a Andrew Johnson single to left field.

For the third-straight inning, senior pitcher Matt Sommo retired the side in the top of the third inning. UNH added its second run in the bottom of the third inning, to take a 2-0 lead. Stephen Clout led off the inning with a double to left center, while Ryan Brockett drove in the eventual game-winning run off a single through the right side two batters later.

Assumption scored its only run in the fifth inning off two hits and a sacrifice fly. Both teams were then shutout for the remainder of the afternoon.

New Haven threatened in the seventh inning with two base runners, while the Greyhounds best opportunity to tie the game came in the ninth top of the ninth. Assumption opened the ninth with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt to put the go-ahead run on second base. After an intentional walk, the bases were loaded for Drew Dombkowski. Dombkowski hit a fly ball to right field which was caught by Clout. The junior then hurled the ball to catcher Shane O'Connell and completed the double play to end the game.

Clout's play also secured Rossi's record-tying save, his eighth of the season, and improved Sommo's record to 3-1 on the season. Sommo pitched eight innings, threw nine strikeouts and gave up four hits. Rossi threw one complete inning and allowed two hits.

Clout led the UNH bats with two hits and one run, while Brockett also recorded two hits with one RBI.

New Haven will return to action on Thursday, April 28 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on the Greyhounds in their second meeting of the season. Game time at Rochleau Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
