NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team suffered a pair of losses on Tuesday afternoon, as the Chargers dropped a doubleheader to Southern Connecticut State University at Pelz Field on the campus of SCSU. Batting woes plagued the UNH offense, as the squad mustered just one run in each contest, falling 5-1 in game one and 3-1 in the nightcap.
With the losses, New Haven dropped to 26-15 on the season and 16-10 in Northeast-10 Conference competition. Southern Connecticut improved to 23-16, 16-8 in the league and jumped ahead of the Chargers in the NE-10 standings.
Game One
The Owls powered their way past the Chargers in the first game, collecting two homeruns off the bats of Robin Priest and Brittany Bucko. Priest’s two-run shot in the second inning granted the Owls a 3-0 lead, an advantage that Jayme Larson and SCSU would never relinquish. Larson tossed all seven innings for the Owls, allowed one run on two hits and struck out seven in her 13th win of the campaign.
The Chargers’ offense struggled mightily, as Brandy Dianno and Brooke Fisher were the only two players to record hits. Dianno came around to score UNH’s only run on a throwing error by the Owls’ shortstop in the fifth inning. Pitchers Alana Wesche and Keri Tricinelli combined to throw six innings and strike out five opposing batters in the game.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader featured another strong performance from SCSU’s Jayme Larson, as the sophomore once again held the Chargers to one run. The Owls’ offense put a three-spot on the scoreboard in the second inning, proving to be the difference in the outcome. UNH’s Micah Stonesifer allowed just four hits in the game and struck out six, but suffered her eighth loss of the season. Larson scattered four hits and struck out three in her 14th win of the season.
Dianno added two more hits to her afternoon, while Lindsey Couturior and Shannon Angehr accounted for the other two. Couturior drove in Angehr in the sixth inning for the Chargers lone run in the game.
New Haven left a total of 11 runners on base in the two games.
UNH will return to the field with a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 28 at Georgian Court. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
