LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The University of New Haven softball team, led by junior pitcher Micah Stonesifer who allowed just four hits in both games, shutout Georgian Court University in a pair of games Friday afternoon. The Charges took the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 2-0. New Haven completed the sweep with an 8-0 six-inning victory. The Chargers improved to 28-15 overall, while the Lions fell to 25-21 on the season.
Game One
With a lead off single to center field, Chelsea Harold got the Chargers started right out of the gate in game one. Christina Gelardi hit another single two batters later and put two on base with one out. After a strikeout, the Chargers scored two runs off an error by the Lions' second baseman. The two runs proved to be all UNH would need in the game.
New Haven left two runners on base in the fifth inning, while the Lions managed base runners in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
Stonesifer pitched the complete game shutout and earned her 14th win of the season. She allowed just two hits and struckout five batters.
Harold led the team with three hits in four at bats, while Gelardi went 2-for-3.
Game Two
The Chargers scored in all but one inning in the nightcap. After on run in each of the first two innings, New Haven took a 6-0 lead after an impressive four runs off four hits in the top of the third inning.
Georgian Court stranded runners on base in first, second, third, fifth and sixth inning, but starting pitcher Micah Stonesifer shutdown the Lions when needed. Keri Tricinelli entered the game and pitched the final 2/3 inning to help secure the Chargers second shutout of the day.
Stonesifer won her 15th game of the season and just two hits in five 1/3 innings. She walked just one and struck out another five batters.
Harold again led the team with two hits and two RBI's in three at bats. Lindsey Couturier also had two hits, while Tricinelli went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
New Haven will return to action on Saturday, April 30 when they host Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. Game time at the UNH Softball Field is set for 11 a.m.
