WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team swept Saint Michael's College in two games Sunday afternoon. The Chargers took the first game 4-1 behind solid pitching, while completing the sweep with an 11-7 victory in the second game behind solid hitting. New Haven improved to 15-8 overall, while the Purple Knight fell to 4-9 on the season.
Game One
After four scoreless innings, the Chargers scored first in the opening game Sunday afternoon. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kyle Pettoruto led off with a single to right field. Three batters later, New Haven loaded the bases off a single by Chris DeMorais. Tom Rombilus drove in the first run for the Chargers off a four-pitch walk. Freshman second baseman Andrew Johnson drove in the Chargers next two runs with a two-out single to deep right center field. A fly out ended the inning as the Chargers took a 3-0 lead.
The Chargers added their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jack Heary hit a two-out double to right center. New Haven’s next batter, Taylor Candage drove in Heary to give the Chargers a 4-0 lead headed in to the seventh inning.
UNH’s starting pitched, Alex Smith continued to pitch excellent through the seventh inning as he helped retire the side in the seventh. Smith pitched into the eighth inning and gave up a lead off triple before forcing three-straight outs. The Purple Knights scored their one run in the eighth inning as well.
Freshman Andrew Johnson led the Chargers at the plate with two RBI's and one hit. Seven other Chargers recorded one hit in the game, including Taylor Candage who scored one and drove one in as well.
Game Two
New Haven quickly opened the nightcap with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Ryan Brockett added another two runs for UNH in the third inning with a two-run homrun over the left field fence.
With a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth, UNH gave up one run in the top of the fourth and two in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3. One more run scored off a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth gave the Chargers a 6-3 lead.
New Haven's lead would not last long, however. Saint Micheal's scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning off four hits and one UNH error to even the score at 6-6. The Chargers regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with another three runs. Freshman second baseman Brendon Buckley hit the second homerun of the game and drove in another two runs to give UNH a 8-6 lead. Cory Carr drove in another run later in the inning to give the Chargers a three-point lead, 9-6.
The Purple Knights added one more in the top of the eighth inning, while the Chargers added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth off a pair of sacrifice flies.
In total, the Charger bats came alive with 10 hits, while the Purple Knights recorded nine. New Haven also added a remarkable 12 stolen bases in the game. Buckley, Brockett and Heary each stole three bases in the game, while Tom Rombilus stole two and Andrew Johnson one.
Heary led the Chargers in the nightcap with two hits, three RBI's and two runs. Buckley finished with two hits, two RBI's and two runs, while Brockett added one hit, one RBI and three runs.
Five different pitchers threw in the second game for UNH. John Melville started the game and pitched four 1/3 innings. Thre freshman struck out four and allowed two earned runs. Henry Hirsch was the fourth pitcher in the game and ended up earning the victory with one 2/3 innings of action. Taylor Candage thre the final one 1/3 innings and recorded a save.
New Haven will hit the road for a midweek non-conference game at Dominican College on Wednesday, April 6 before traveling to Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, April 9 for a NE-10 doubleheader. First pitch in Orangeburg, N.Y. on Wednesday is set for 3 p.m.
