WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team, led by a pair of wins from Eric Peck and a pair of saves by Mitch Rossi, swept Stonehill College in a pair of games at Frank Vieira Field Saturday afternoon. The Chargers took the opener by a score of 5-3 and capped the day with an 8-5 victory. With two wins, New Haven improved to 23-14 overall and 11-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Skyhawks fell to 28-15 overall and 11-10 in conference play.
Game One
Stonehill opened scoring in the first game with a pair of runs off two hits in the top of the second inning. After retiring the side in the previous three innings, the Chargers' bats came alive in the fourth inning. Jack Heary hit a single through the right side and drove in Brendon Buckley from second base to bring the score within one at 2-1.
The Skyhawks improved their lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth with one run off two UNH errors. The Chargers would then take the lead in the bottom of the sixth when they scored three runs off four hits. Shane O'Connell drove in the Chargers' second run with a single to right center. Heary then stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and hit a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield.
With a 4-3 lead, the Chargers' pitching staff of Eric Peck, Mike Aquilino and Mitch Rossi shutdown the Skyhawks in the final three innings. UNH added one security run in the bottom of the seventh off a Buckley sacrifice bunt with one out.
Heary led the UNH bats in the first game, going 3-for-4 at the dish with three RBI's. Ryan Brockett went 2-for-4 with one run, while Buckley went 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs.
Henry Hirsch started the game for the Chargers on the mound. He pitched five 1/3 innings and allowed three hits. He threw four strikeouts and allowed just one earned run. Peck earned the win in 2/3 innings, while Aquilino tossed one 2/3 innings in relief and Rossi closed the final one 1/3 innings. Rossi collected his 10th save of the season and improved his new NCAA Division II career saves record to 34.
Game Two
In Saturday's second game, Stonehill connected early on freshman Pat Simone's pitching. The Skyhawks scored two runs off one walk and a homerun in the top of the first inning. New Haven would also get on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Shane O'Connell drove in a run off a sacrifice fly to center field.
Three singled opened the bottom of the second inning for New Haven as the bases were loaded with no outs. Andrew Johnson then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the score at 2-2. Stephen Clout, Buckley and O'Connell then drove in consecutive runs to give the Chargers a 5-2 lead.
Stonehill then cut the lead back to 5-4 with two runs off two hits in the top of the third inning. UNH left one runner on base in the bottom of the third. Each team left one runner on base in the fourth inning as the Chargers held on to a narrow 5-4 lead. UNH concluded the top half of the fourth with its second double play in as many innings.
The Skyhawks then tied the score at 5-5 in the top of the fifth inning off a one-out RBI. The Chargers were held scoreless until the eighth inning, while the pitching staff once again shutdown the Skyhawk bats. The Chargers narrowly took a lead in the bottom of the sixth as they loaded the bases with two outs. A line drive ended the inning with it still tied 5-5.
The Chargers would take control of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Clout led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, while Buckley advanced him to second with a textbook sacrifice bunt. Ryan Brockett then stepped to the plate and hit a single to second base. O'Connell then drove in the game's winning runs with a long double down the left field line which scored both Clout and Brockett, putting UNH ahead 7-5. After one walk and a strikeout, David Wirkus then drove in the game's final run with a single up the middle of the infield.
Rossi then took the mound for UNH and pitched the complete ninth inning, earning his 11th save of the season and the 35th save of his career. Peck make his second appearance of the day in the complete eighth inning. The junior recorded his second win of the day by striking out the side in the eighth.
Pay Simone tossed two 1/3 innings in the win, while Peter Jay threw four 2/3 innings in the win.
O'Connell led the Chargers with two hits and four RBI's in four at bats. Buckley went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Clout added one RBI, two runs and one hit.
New Haven returns to action at Bentley University on Sunday, May 1 for another NE-10 doubleheader. Game time in Waltham, Mass is set for 12 p.m.
