WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Lucy Francisco connected on two home runs during Saturday's doubleheader as the University of New Haven swept Saint Anselm College by the scores of 5-3 and 10-2. Francisco hit a home run in each game including a walk-off three run dinger in game two. As a team, the Chargers hit five home runs total as they improved to 30-15 and 18-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference while Saint Anselm dropped to 20-22 and 12-14 in league play. Coach Jen Starek earned her 200th career win with the Chargers victory in game one.
Game One
The Chargers got on the board early and often, scoring in each of the first three innings. Shannon Angehr got things started in the bottom of the first, connecting on New Haven's first hit of the game with a single to left field. She would later cross home plate as Lindsey Couturier drove her in with a single to left center.
New Haven would add another run in the second on Francisco's first home run of the day before adding two more on a deep shot over the left field fence from Christina Gelardi, driving in Angehr and giving the Chargers a 4-0 lead after three.
The Hawks would rally late in the game, scoring a run in each of the last three innings. However, the lead was too much as New Haven pulled away with a 5-3 win.
Angehr led the team offensively, going 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored. Alana Wesche pitched six innings, allowing just three runs on five hits. She is now 12-7 on the season. Micah Stonesifer recorded the save, retiring the final three batters of the game.
Game Two
It was all New Haven in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. The first inning began with a three-run home run from Brooke Fisher over the left field fence. The Chargers would add two more runs in the second on another home run from Angehr. Her blast drove in Chelsea Harold as New Haven pulled away, 5-0.
Saint Anselm got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, however their run would end shortly after as
Francisco connected on her second home run of the day, driving in three more batters and ending the game. The Chargers won by the score of 10-2.
Keri Tricinelli started and allowed just one earned run on three hits. Stonesifer entered the game in a relief effort and recorded her second save on the day, she now has four on the season.
Offensively, the Chargers collected 11 hits in just five innings compared to three from the visiting squad. Angehr was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored and Gelardi led all batters with three hits in three appearances with one RBI and two runs scored. Fisher added another two hits, three RBI and two runs scored to round out the top offensive performances for New Haven.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow, May 1 to host Southern New Hampshire in a doubleheader. Game time is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
