Chargers Use Extra Innings to Earn Non-Conference Win

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Dominican College (N.Y.) 4-2 Wednesday afternoon in a 10-inning game in New York. With the win the Chargers improved to 16-8 on the season, while Dominican fell to 13-9 on the season.

New Haven wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in Wednesday's game. With two outs in the top of the first inning, Ryan Brockett reached second base on an error by Dominican. Shane O'Connell then drove a single up the middle, which scored Brockett and gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead early.

Dominican would also capitialize in the first inning by scoring one run off two hits. Tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the second inning, Dominican took the lead after another one run off two hits.

Both teams' bats were then held scoreless until the top of the eighth inning. Stephen Clout sparked the Chargers with a RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 2-2. Dominican would threaten in the bottom of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with two outs. A ground out to second base concluded the last inning of regulation.

New Haven then led off the 10th inning with back-to-back base runners. Kyle Pettoruto led off with a walk, while Jack Heary then put the game-winning run in scoring position with a single through the left side. Chris DeMorais then reached base off an error, while Pettoruto advanced home for the go-ahead run. Tom Rombilus, the Chargers next batter, then drove in Heary with a bunt single to first base. Three straight outs then concluded the top of the 10th inning as the Chargers took a 4-2 lead.

New Haven starting pitcher Taylor Candage was relieved in the top of the 9th inning after hurling eight innings, striking out four and allowing seven hits. Senior Mitch Rossi came in prior to the ninth inning and held Dominican scoreless through two innings. The Chargers secured the victory with a pair of fly outs and a force out in the 10th.

Rossi earned his second win of the season in the relief appearance. O'Connell and Rombilus each recorded two hits and one RBI in the win. Clout added one hit and one RBI, while four others each scored one run.

New Haven will return to action on Saturday, April 9 when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 12 p.m.
