SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New Haven softball team completed a two-game sweep of American International College on Wednesday afternoon, as the Chargers captured game one in 10 innings by the final score of 9-4 and then went on to take the nightcap by a final count of 6-1. With the wins, UNH improved to 18-7 on the season and 8-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The hosting Yellow Jackets fell to 7-15, 3-5 in league competition.

Game One
The first game of the afternoon featured a back and forth battle that would need extra innings to determine a winner. Chelsea Harold, as she does so often, led off the game with a base-hit and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Keri Tricinelli for an early 1-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets answered with three runs in the fifth to take the lead, but their advantage was short-lived as the Chargers fought back with two more in the ensuing inning. Tricinelli laced an RBI double for the first run and Allison Vaughan recorded the second RBI when she was hit by a pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Neither team mustered a run until the 10 innings, where UNH boasted an offensive outburst.

Shannon Angehr pushed the go-ahead run across the plate with an RBI single to open the inning’s scoring summary. That run was followed by five more on three hits and two errors, en route to a commanding 9-3 lead. AIC recorded one more in the 10th frame but fell short of its six run deficit.

Alana Wesche and Micah Stonesifer combined for 10 innings of work, allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out seven in the game. Stonesifer relieved Wesche in the fifth inning and was credited with her eighth win of the campaign.

Game Two
The Chargers’ starting pitcher for game two, Tricinelli, provided the Chargers with exactly what they needed after the 10-inning marathon. Tricinelli tossed an absolute gem, as the sophomore scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out two for her first win of the season.

Offensively, New Haven scored runs in four of the seven innings to build a commanding lead. The Chargers collected 13 hits en route to six runs to support Tricinelli in the circle. Harold finished 3-of-4 with two RBI and one run scored, Christina Gelardi tallied three hits, two runs and one RBI and Lindsey Couturior and Angehr each added two hits apiece. Tricinelli, Brooke Fisher and Courtney Garland accounted for the last three hits for the Chargers.

New Haven returns to the field on Saturday, April 9 with an away game at UMass Lowell before traveling to North Andover, Mass. to take on Merrimack College on Sunday. Both doubleheaders will begin at 12 p.m. Live statistics will be available at www.NewHavenChargers.com.
