MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven baseball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games at Southern New Hampshire University Saturday afternoon. The Chargers fell 7-9 in the opener and dropped the nightcap 3-4. New Haven dropped to 16-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play with the two losses. The Penmen improved to 14-13 overall and 3-5 in the NE-10.
Game One
The Chargers gave up a run in the bottom of the first and the second innings to start off Saturday's doubleheader with a two-run deficit. New Haven would even the score at two in the top of the third inning, followed by another two-run inning in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Shane O'Connell drove in the Chargers fifth run with a double down the right field line to bring in Ryan Brockett. The RBI gave New Haven a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Penmen bats started to come alive in the fifth. A lead off double and a pair of sacrifice hits brought SNHU within two, 5-3. Southern New Hampshire would eventually take the lead off a six-run sixth inning. The inning included a grand slam and two additional runs for the Penmen to take a 9-5 lead.
The Chargers added one run in the seventh and another in the eighth, but could not put together a late-game rally. UNH standed 11 runners on base in the loss and tallied 12 hits.
New Haven was led by O'Connell who went 4-for-5 at the dish and drove in two runs. Freshman Andrew Johnson went 3-for-5 with three RBI's and one run scored. On the mound, freshman Pat Simone lasted five 1/3 innings and struck out five. He allowed six hits and six earned runs in his first loss of the season.
Game Two
Unlike the first game of the doubleheader, UNH came out of the gate and scored in the opening inning of the nightcap. A one-run sacrifice fly from Ryan Brockett score Tom Rombilus and gave the Chargers an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. SNHU tied the score in the bottom of the first off a wild pitch.
The Penmen would take the lead in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out double which scored one run. Southern New Hampshire took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, while the Chargers added one in the top of the sixth off a Jack Heary RBI. The Penmen scored what ended up being the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning off a two-out error in the outfield.
The Chargers scored one more in the ninth inning before recording the third out with the bases loaded.
In another great pitching appearance, UNH starter Alex Smith threw seven 1/3 innings and struck out eight batters. He allowed five hits and four runs in the game.
Offensively, the Chargers left another 10 runners on base in the nightcap. Brockett led the team with two hits, one run and one RBI, while Rombilus added two hits and one run in game two.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Southern Connecticut State University at Frank Vieira Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
