LOWELL, Mass. – The University of New Haven softball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games on Saturday afternoon, as the Chargers were defeated by University of Massachusetts Lowell at River View Field. The Riverhawks took game one by the final score of 12-3 and completed the sweep with an 8-0 win in the nightcap, both through five innings of play.
With the losses, New Haven fell to 18-9 on the campaign and 8-4 in league competition. UMass Lowell improved to 18-12, 4-4 in the NE-10.
Game One
In the first game, the hosting Riverhawks posted six runs in the first, one in the second and five more in the third for commanding lead that they would never relinquish. The Chargers got one run back in the third inning and two more in the fourth on a two-run shot from Courtney Garland, but couldn’t cut into their deficit. The mercy rule was enforced after the fifth inning, granting the Riverhawks the game-one triumph.
New Haven recorded seven hits from seven different players in the outing. Starting pitcher Alana Wesche was on the losing end, as the sophomore dropped to 8-4 on the season.
Game Two
The back end of the doubleheader featured a similar story to the first game of the day. The Riverhawks generated three runs in the third and then enforced the mercy rule in the fifth inning with five more runs. The Chargers only collected two hits in the game, a double by Brooke Fisher and a single from Brandy Dianno.
Riverhawk starting pitcher Elyssa Boris was stellar in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout to go along with two strike outs. Micah Stonesifer was credited with the loss for the visiting Chargers.
New Haven returns to action tomorrow, April 10 with a doubleheader in North Andover, Mass. The Chargers will take on Merrimack College at 12 p.m.
