WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven baseball team split two Northeast-10 Conference games at Bentley University Sunday afternoon. The Chargers took the opening game 7-1, but fell 4-3 in a ninth inning come-from-behind victory in the nightcap. New Haven moved to 24-15 overall and 12-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Bentley moved to 13-25 overall and 7-14 in conference play.
Game One
Bentley took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the third inning with one run off two hits. The Chargers answered with two runs off a two-out double to right field by freshman Chris DeMorais in the top of the fourth inning.
New Haven starting pitcher Matt Sommo shutout the Falcons for the final six innings, while the bats added another five runs.
David Wirkus drove in the Chargers third and fourth runs with another two-out double to left field in the top of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, New Haven scored another three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take its final lead of 7-1. Ryan Brockett and Jack Heary both recorded RBI's in the inning.
Sommo pitched eight full innings in his fourth win of the season. He threw four strikeouts, allowed no earned runs and eight hits in the game. Kris Selvaggi pitched the final inning for UNH and struck out one.
Brockett led the team with three hits in five at bats. He drove in one run and scored another two runs. Andrew Johnson went 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Heary added one hit, one RBI and one run.
Game Two
Bentley took an early lead in the nightcap with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Falcons used four hits and one error to take a 2-0 lead.
The Chargers would gradually work their way back into the game with one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Brockett for the Chargers on the board as he scored off a throwing error by the catcher. In the fifth inning, Johnson drove in Wirkus to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. DeMorais drove in the Chargers go-ahead run with a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth inning.
New Haven held on to its lead until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Falcons tied the score at 3-3 with one run off three hits and one UNH error. The Chargers then left two runners on base in the top of the eighth innings as the game remained tied into the ninth inning.
The Falcons would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning before hitting a game-winning single to second base.
Pitching one and 1/3 innings, Peter Jay suffered the loss. Freshman John Melville started the game and last five 1/3 innings. He struck out three and allowed one earned run.
Heary went 3-for-5 at the plate, while three others all recorded two hits in the loss.
New Haven will return to action on Tuesday, May 3 when they host the College of Saint Rose at Frank Vieira Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
