Game Two Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Junior pitcher Micah Stonesifer collected her 16th and 17th wins of the season on Sunday afternoon, as the University of New Haven softball team completed a two-game sweep of Southern New Hampshire University on Senior Day at the UNH Softball Field. The Chargers took game one by the final score of 3-2 in walk-off fashion in extra innings and captured the back end of the doubleheader with a 2-0 decision.

With the wins, the Chargers have clinched a berth in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, to begin next week. Seniors Chelsea Harold and Courtney Garland were honored before the game for their tremendous careers with the program.

UNH reached the 30-win plateau for the third consecutive season, improving to 31-15, 20-10 in conference competition. SNHU dropped to 19-25, 17-13 in the league.

Game One
In the first game of the doubleheader, Southern New Hampshire would strike first in the contest. The Penmen garnered the game’s first two runs on back-to-back RBI singles in the third frame, granting the visitors a 2-0 advantage.

However, poor defense by Southern New Hampshire allowed the Chargers back into the game in the sixth inning. With two outs in the frame and Chelsea Harold and Shannon Angehr standing on second and third, Courtney Garland stepped into the batters’ box. Garland popped up to the right side of the infield where a misplayed ball would result in two runs and a tie game for the home team.

Neither team was able to generate a run in the seventh, sending the two teams into extra innings. After a scoreless eighth frame, the Chargers would find the game-winning run on another SNHU mishap in the field. Pinch runner Amy Nepi (Brooke Fisher drew a leadoff walk) made her way to third base after a pair of ground balls and came around to score on another dropped fly ball by the Penmen for a 3-2 triumph.

Starting pitcher Alana Wesche tossed 2.2 innings and surrendered two runs on five hits. Stonesifer relieved Wesche in the third inning and went the rest of the way for the Chargers. She allowed just one hit over 6.1 innings and struck out five batters for her team leading 16th win of the season.

Offensively, the Chargers were led by the conference’s best hitter, Chelsea Harold. She finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Harold currently leads the conference in both categories. Brooke Fisher added the other hit for New Haven.

Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader also featured a low-scoring affair, due in large part to Stonesifer. She went the distance, allowed no runs on just one hit and struck out three in the victory. She leads the conference with the lowest ERA and in one behind the leader in wins.

Keri Tricinelli provided the offense, as the Brick, N.J. native collected both RBI for the Chargers. Tricinelli pushed Christina Gelardi across the plate on a single in the fourth and then brought Garland around to score on a double in the sixth. The two runs would be the only offense of the game and granted UNH a 2-0 victory. Fisher tallied the only other hit for the Chargers.

If the Chargers end up being one of the fifth through eighth seeds, they will return to action on Wednesday, May 3 with the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Should the Charger clinch one of the top four spots, they receive a bye to the championship tournament final site on Friday, May 6. The time, place and opponent have yet to be determined as the final day of the conference season finishes today.
