WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven opened a 2-0 lead in the third inning and held on to defeated the College of Saint Rose 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The Chargers improved to 25-15 overall and 13-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win, while the Golden Knights fell to 16-26 overall and 8-15 in conference play.
The Chargers opened scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Tom Rombilus opened the inning with a single through the left side. Andrew Johnson then walked to put runners on first and second. Stephen Clout then reached base on a fielder's choice which did not record an out. Two batters later, Ryan Brockett drove in the go-ahead run with a single to the shortstop. Shane O'Connell then stepped to the plate and hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field which drove in Johnson from third base.
New Haven would surrender one run in the top of the fifth inning as the Golden Knights laced back-to-back doubles to lead off the fifth. With a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, O'Connell drove in Brockett and put a security run on the board.
The Golden Knights would threaten with two base runners in the seventh and loaded bases in the eighth, but the Chargers relief pitchers, Eric Peck and Mitch Rossi kept Saint Rose scoreless in the final two 1/3 innings to secure the team's 25th win of the season.
Alex Smith started the game for the Chargers and earned his third win of the season through six 2/3 innings. He fanned seven batters and allowed one run and six hits. Peck threw one inning and struck out two, while Rossi earned his 12th save of the season. The mark is a season-high for the senior and sets a new UNH record, one he previous held with 11.
O'Connell went 1-for-2 with two RBI's in the win. Brockett went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run, while Rombilus also batted .500 with one run.
New Haven returns to action on Thursday, May 5 when they travel to take on the Golden Knights in Albany, N.Y. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
