Box Score
WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior pitcher Micah Stonesifer of the University of New Haven softball team tossed a complete-game shutout on Friday morning, as the Chargers opened the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with a 4-0 victory against UMass Lowell at Marois Field on the campus of Assumption College. The Chargers, one of four teams participating in the double-elimination event, move on to play the No. 1 seeded Greyhounds this afternoon at 1 p.m.
After two and a half innings of scoreless softball, the Chargers struck first in the third frame of action. Brandy Dianno started the rally with a single to right field, followed by Christina Gelardi reaching on an error and an intentional pass to Lindsey Couturior – loading the bases with just one out. Brooke Fisher knocked in the first run of the inning on a fielders’ choice for a 1-0 Chargers’ lead. Shannon Angehr stepped to the dish and also reached on a fielders’ choice, this time bringing two runs across the plate after a throwing error on the play. New Haven collected three runs on one hit for a 3-0 advantage.
Gelardi and the Chargers would add one more in the fourth inning to conclude the game’s scoring summary. She laced an RBI single to score Dianno from second, granting New Haven a 4-0 lead, more than enough insurance for Stonesifer. She tossed all seven innings, scattered three hits and struck out four batters of the 23 she faced. It marked her fifth shutout of the season and 18th win of the campaign.
UNH collected four hits in the game, coming from for different players. Dianno finished with one hit and two runs scored, Gelardi added another with an RBI, Fisher recorded one hit, one run and one RBI and Angehr registered one with two RBI.
The Chargers will face off against Assumption for the third time this season. In their first meeting, the Chargers swept the Greyhounds at home by the final scores of 4-1 and 9-1.
