Chargers Vault to No. 3 in AFCA Division II Coaches’ Poll

WACO, Texas – Following Saturday’s 17-13 victory at then-unbeaten Bentley, the University of New Haven football team has risen to No. 3 in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ Poll. The Chargers currently stand as one of 10 remaining unbeaten Division II teams at 6-0 on the season

The No. 3 national ranking tops last season’s peak spot for New Haven, which gained two slots from last week’s No. 5 position. Aiding the Chargers’ climb in the poll were losses by seven ranked teams, including then-No. 1 Pittsburg State – the defending national champion – and former-No. 4 Missouri Western State.

The new top-ranked squad by the AFCA is Colorado State-Pueblo, which stands at 7-0 and garnered 23 of 30 first-place votes. Super Region One foe Winston-Salem State moved to No. 2 and claimed six first-place tallies. The remaining first-place vote went to No. 5 Northwest Missouri State.

Other Super Region One teams appearing in the AFCA poll are No. 4 Bloomsburg, No. 13 Shippensburg, No. 14 California (Pa.) and No. 20 Indiana (Pa.). The Chargers are the lone Northeast-10 squad in the poll, with Bentley and American International both unranked but receiving votes.

The Chargers also entered this past weekend ranked No. 6 in the D2Football.com Media Poll, which will be updated on Tuesday.

No. 3 New Haven takes the national stage on Thursday, Oct. 18 at Stonehill. The 8 p.m. game from W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass. will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
