BOX SCORE WORCESTER, Mass. – A trio of double-digit kill performances led the University of New Haven women’s volleyball team to a sweep at Assumption on Tuesday evening. The Charger claimed their 10th-consecutive victory by set scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-17.
The Chargers, who have now tallied a winning streak of 10 matches or more in five-straight seasons, improve to 13-1 on the season with a 6-0 record in Northeast-10 play. The Greyhounds fall to 9-14 overall and 3-5 in the NE-10.
2011 All-America outside hitter
Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) led all players with 14 kills, posting a .407 hitting percentage (14-3-27), and was just short of a double-double with nine digs.
Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) hit .500 with 11 kills (11-1-20), and
Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) notched 10 finishers on .346 (10-1-26) hitting.
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) added five kills and
Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) had three. As a unit, New Haven swung at a .293 clip (43-14-99).
Ane ran the offense and distributed 36 assists. The sophomore setter leads the Northeast-10 and entered the week ranked 16th in all of Division II with 11.18 assists per set.
Defensively,
Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) led the back row with a match-best 15 digs. Candelaria added nine digs, Ane posted seven and Lee chipped in with six. At the net, Atufunwa and Cannady each had a hand in two of the Chargers’ four blocks.
New Haven landed five service aces – two apiece from Ane and Olaso and one winner of the serve of
Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West).
Assumption’s Ryan Merle recorded a team-high eight kills. Kristin Flatekval distributed 26 assists, and Jess Reimers had 10 digs for the Greyhounds. Assumption hit .092 (30-20-109) as a team.
The Chargers’ three-match road swing concludes on Thursday at Bridgeport. Action returns to Charger Gym on Saturday, Oct. 13 as Northeast-10 action resumes with a 1 p.m. visit from Massachusetts Lowell.
