Saint Rose Clips Chargers in Northeast-10 Opener

BOX SCORE ALBANY, N.Y. – Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but the University of New Haven men’s basketball team was unable to overcome a hot-shooting Saint Rose team in an 83-69 loss on Wednesday in Albany. Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) shared the game high with 22 points for the Chargers.

New Haven falls to 0-2 on the young season and 0-1 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Rose remains perfect at 3-0.

Exum’s 22 points came on 8-for-14 shooting, including a 5-for-8 evening from beyond the arc. Anderson’s double-double is his first of 2012-13 after turning the trick in two contests in his NE-10 All-Rookie Team campaign last winter. Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) matched Anderson in the scoring column with 16 points and dished out a team-high six assists.

Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) added eight points for New Haven, Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) added four and Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) rounded out the scoring with three points courtesy of a trey off the bench. As a team, the Chargers shot 27-for-55 (49.1 percent) from the field, 7-for-20 (35 percent) from three-point range and 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) from the free throw line.

Saint Rose turned in a very strong shooting performance, connecting on 32-of-57 (56.1 percent) attempts from the floor with an 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) outing from three-point range and 11-for-12 (91.7 percent) shooting at the charity stripe. Tyler Sayre matched Exum with 22 points and Dominykas Milka recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

After racing out to a 16-16 deadlock through the first seven minutes – sparked by six early points from James – the Chargers slipped behind as the Golden Knights notched the next four points. New Haven got 12 first-half buckets from Exum courtesy of four three-pointers, but the home team held the Chargers at arm’s length for the rest of the opening period, extending the margin to double figures and heading into the locker room with a 41-31 lead.

New Haven opened the first half on a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to four points, and then climbed within one at 56-55 on an Adkins tip-in and a Williams jumper with 9:26 to play. However, the Chargers could not pull even with Saint Rose as the Golden Knights responded with a 12-1 stretch to reclaim a double-digit advantage at 68-58 with 5:16 to go. Both clubs continued to put points on the board, which was enough for Saint Rose to take an 83-69 decision.

The Chargers return home this Sunday for a 4 p.m. non-conference meeting with Queens College.
