LANTANA, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team split a doubleheader against Philadelphia University on Wednesday. The Chargers dropped the opener 1-2, but rebounded with a walk-off 5-4 victory in the second game. UNH moved to 5-4 on the season, while the Rams now stand at 5-10 on the year.
Game One
The one-run game to open the doubleheader was scoreless through four innings. The Chargers left two runners on base in the second inning, while the Rams left two on base in the third and the fourth inning. Philadelphia put three hits together in the bottom of the fifth inning and took a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning,
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) singled with one out and then stole second base. After another out,
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) hit a two-out RBI single to even the game at 1-1 after the top of the sixth. The Rams added an unearned RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to regain a one-run lead, 2-1. New Haven then opened the seventh inning with a walk and single to put the tying run on second base with no outs. The Chargers could not, however, get a runner home and suffered their fourth loss of the season.
Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) suffered the loss and pitched the complete game for UNH. He allowed just one earned run, while striking out four and walking just one.
Buckley led the Chargers at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Game Two
The close game continued into the second game on Wednesday. As the visiting team in the second game, the Rams opened with a pair of hits and one run in the top of the first. Buckley answered in the bottom of the first for New Haven with a RBI single with runners on third and second. Tied 1-1 heading into the second, Philadelphia strung together two hits for one run and a 2-1 lead.
New Haven would eventually even the score in the bottom of the third.
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) hit a one-out triple and Brockett drove in the game-tying run in the Chargers next at-bat. The tie didn't last long as Philadelphi regained the advantage in the top of the fourth inning off two hits and one error. The Rams took a two-run, 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. With two runners on base,
Tim Geer (Derby, Conn./Derby) pinch hit and drove in the Chargers third run in the bottom of the sixth.
In his second complete inning,
Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) retired the side in the top of the seventh inning and the Chargers trailed by one, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the final inning. Johnson earned a one-out walk and stole second base to put the tying run in scoring position for UNH. Buckley then came through with a two-out triple and drove in the game-tying run. Freshman
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) then stepped to the plate and singled to score the Chargers walk-off run.
Buckley went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Johnson and Collett each went 2-for-3. Johnson scored three runs, while Collett drove in one and scored one.
Peck earned the win in two innings of work, his second of the season.
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched the first five innings and threw four strikeouts, while allowing just two earned runs.
New Haven returns to action tomorrow, Thursday, March 15 in a game against Caldwell College. The game was suspended after four innings on Sunday with the score tied at 3-3. The final five innings will be completed at the Santaluces Sports Complex on Thursday at 3 p.m. Stay posted to
