LANTANA, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team concluded a previously rain-halted game against Caldwell College Thursday afternoon and defeated the Cougars 4-3. With the win, the Chargers improved to 6-4 this season, while the Cougars fell to 0-8 on the year.
In the first three innings, which were played on Sunday before rain called a halt to the game, New Haven and Caldwel played to a 3-3 tie. In the bottom of the second, the Cougars scored three runs off four hits and took a 3-0 lead. The Chargers answered in the top of the third inning when
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) and
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) each drove in runs. UNH also scored on a wild pitch and the score was tied at 3-3.
The game was finished on Thursday and the Chargers added the game-winning run when
Kyle Pettoruto (Andover, Mass./St. John's Prep ) drew a walk with the bases loaded. The Cougars left two runners on base and the Chargers left one on base in the final four innings, but neither team scored a run.
Henry Hirsch (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) pitched the opening three innings and allowed three earned runs. He also struck out three batters and walked three.
John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) earned the win coming into the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. The sophomore struckout four, held the Cougars hitless and walked just one batter.
Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) earned a save with the final two innings of work. He threw one strikeout and didn't allow a Caldwell hit.
Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) led the UNH bats, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one run. In the two spot,
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) went 2-for-5 with one RBI.
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) added one hit and one RBI.
