Chargers Split NE-10 Opener Against AIC

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team split its 2012 Northeast-10 Conference opening doubleheader against American International College Tuesday afternoon. New Haven took the opener 7-5, but fell in the nightcap 6-1. The Chargers moved to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets now stand at 5-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Game One
The Chargers rallied with three runs off one hit and one AIC error in the bottom of the first inning. Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) added to the Chargers lead with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the second inning. The Chargers lead 4-0 headed into the bottom of the fifth inning as well.

UNH then loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) walked and drove in UNH's fifth run, while Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) was hit by a pitch to force in the sixth run. After a strikeout, Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) walked and drove in the seventh run. Another strike out and the fifth inning came to an end.

AIC scored two in the top of the sixth and three in the top of the seventh off seven total hits to cut the lead back to two runs. The Chargers Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) finished with a strikeout as the Chargers opened NE-10 play with a 7-5 victory.

New Haven's Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) earned the complete game victory in the opener. She allowed eight hits and five runs, while striking out three batters. At the plate, Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run, while Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) went 2-for-3 with one run. Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) went 1-for-2 with one RBI and two runs.

Game Two
AIC started with two hits and one run in the top of the first inning to take a quick lead at UNH Softball Field. The Chargers answered with another Francisco sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, which scored Angehr. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning, but AIC added another run in the top of the third inning. A double opened the inning and the runner eventually scored to break the tie.

The Yellow Jackets held on to the lead, shutting out the Chargers for the remainder of the game. UNH managed three more hits, but could not capitalize with a run. AIC scored one more in the top of the fifth inning and three more in the top of the seventh inning to take the game by a final score of 6-1.

Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) suffered the loss in six 2/3 innings. At the plate, Francisco led the team with the only RBI, while Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ) went 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) also went 1-for-1 at the dish.
