WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team, led by a seven-inning shutout performance by
Mike Aquilino (West Haven, Conn./West Haven), defeated Post University 4-1 Wednesday afternoon in its 2012 home opener at Frank Vieira Field. With the win, the Chargers improved to 8-4 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 6-13.
The opener three innings of Wednesday game saw just four base runners for the Eagles. New Haven managed two in the first, three in the second and two in the third, but could not produce a run. In the bottom of the fourth, the Chargers strung together four hits for two runs to take the first lead of the game.
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) opened the inning with an infield single, while Brendan O'Reilly singled to center field in the next at-bat.
Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) then laid down a bunt-single to load the bases with no outs.
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) then drew a walk and drove in the opening run of the game. After a force-out at home plate,
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) singled down the right field line to drive in the second run. A pop up and strike out ended the fourth with the bases loaded for UNH.
Behind the arm of Aquilino and stellar defense, the Chargers kept Post off the board in the fifth and six innings. New Haven's
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, to give the Chargers a 4-0 lead. After seven full innings, Aquilino came out after the seventh inning with five strikeouts and only two hits.
The Eagles added one in the top of the eighth, but the Chargers'
Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) closed out in the top of the ninth as the Chargers earned their eighth win of the season. Jay earned his third save of the season and maintained a perfect 0.00 ERA.
At the plate, Brockett went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run, while Buckley went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Collett also enjoyed a multi-hit game and went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
