GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven softball team dropped a pair of games at Adelphi University Saturday. In game one, the Chargers fell 3-5, followed by a 0-2 loss in the nightcap. The Chargers fell to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Panthers improved to 12-7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Game One
After a scoreless top of the first inning, Adelphi was quick to get on the board with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Panthers used four hits to score three runs and take an early lead. New Haven's first run came in the top of the third inning when
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) doubled to left center to drive in
Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ).
Adelphi was the next team to score in the bottom of the fifth inning when three hits led to a pair of runs and a 5-1 lead. The Chargers rallied in the top of the seventh and final inning, but two runs off three hits left the Chargers behind by two.
Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) suffered the loss in the circle for UNH. She went the complete game and allowed five earned runs. She also struck out one and walked two.
At the plate, Angehr led the team with two hits and two runs in four at-bats.
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) continued to be impressive at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Game Two
In the later game, Adelphi scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning off one hit and one error. That was all the Panthers needed as their starting pitcher Laurin Watts shutdown the Charger bats with a no-hitter. The Chargers managed three base runners off an error, a walk and one hit by pitch.
In the second inning,
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) was hit by a pitched and eventually made it to third base and the Chargers only base-running threat in the game.
Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) suffered the loss for UNH. She allowed no earned runs and five hits. The sophomore also struck out four and walked just one batter.
