Softball Takes One at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of New Haven softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Assumption College Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers dropped the opening game 0-2, but rebounds with a 9-7 victory in game two. New Haven moved to 10-10 overall and 3-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the split. The Greyhounds moved to 12-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Game One
The Chargers managed just three base runners off two hits in the opening game Wednesday. Assumption scored one run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings off three combined hits to take a two-run opening game. 

Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) recorded both hits for the Chargers, while Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) earned a base after being hit by a pitch. Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) suffered the loss for New Haven in the complete game. She gave up six hits and two runs, while striking out three.

Game Two
New Haven rebounded in game two and opened with two hits and a run in the first inning. Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) led off with a triple and Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) singled up the middle to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Assumption answered in the bottom of the first and eventually took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. One run in the third and one in the fourth gave the Greyhounds a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth.

Francisco sparked an eight-hit, seven-run rally for New Haven in the top of the fifth inning. The spree included a three-RBI homerun from Sadie Redman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor), a two-RBI single from Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) and a RBI-single from Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy). The Chargers took an 8-3 lead after the fifth. The Greyhounds scored four more runs off four hits and one UNH error in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Chargers lead to just one, 8-7. 

In the top of the ninth inning, Redman hit a one-out single to left field and Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) capitalized with a two-out RBI single to center field, giving the Chargers a 9-7 lead. Three straight outs came in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Chargers secured the two-run victory.

Redman led the Chargers at the plate with two hits, two runs and three RBI. Francisco went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run, while Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) improved to 5-4 on the season with the win. She struck out seven and allowed 10 hits in the win.

New Haven returns to action on Thursday, March 29 when it travels to Caldwell College for a non-conference showdown. Game time in New Jersey is set for 3 p.m. Stay posted to www.NewHavenChargers.com for complete coverage.
