Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader at Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. - The University of New Haven softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Caldwell College Thursday afternoon. The Chargers fell 6-7 in the opening game, but rallied for a come-from-behind 13-6 victory in the nightcap. The Chargers moved to 11-11 overall, while the Cougars moved to 19-6 on the season.

Game One
Both teams stranded two runners on base and were held scoreless in the opening inning. In the bottom of the second inning, Caldwell took a 1-0 lead after two UNH errors scored a run for the Cougars. In the top of the third inning, Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) hit a two-out three RBI homerun over the center field fence to put UNH ahead 3-1.

Caldwell regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs off four hits. The Cougars' 4-3 lead disappeared in the top of the fifth inning when Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) and Fisher each drove in a run and gave UNH a 5-4 lead. Caldwell evened the score in the bottom of the fifth inning with another two hits and one run.

The seventh and final inning proved to be the deciding one Thursday afternoon. Fisher drove in the Chargers' sixth run off a bunt single to the pitcher in the top of the inning. The Chargers took a 6-5 lead, but the Cougars rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Caldwell used two hits and two UNH errors to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, sealing the come-from-behind walk-off single.

Fisher led the Chargers in the loss with three hits in four at-bats. She drove in a season-high five runs and scored another. Spivey went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) suffered the loss in the circle in game one.

Game Two
Caldwell began the second game with a 3-0 lead after the first three innings. The Chargers worked their way back into the game with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Cougars took a 4-3 lead after the sixth inning and then the Chargers came alive.

New Haven strung together eight hits and two Caldwell errors for an amazing 10 runs. After opening the inning with a ground out, the Chargers scored 10 runs to take a 13-4 lead. Caldwell added two runs off three UNH errors in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Chargers' lead to seven points.

Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) earned the win, her sixth of the season. She pitched the full seven innings and allowed just three earned runs. At the plate, Spivey led the team with three hits in four at-bats. She aded three RBI and one run in the win. Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) went 2-for-5 with three runs and one RBI. Sadie Redman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) went 2-for-3 with two runs. Fisher added two RBI, while Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) added two runs.
