WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team defeated Saint Michael's College in two games Saturday. The Chargers took the opening game 9-1 in six innings and capped the day with an 11-0, five-inning victory. The Chargers improved to 13-11 on the season, while the Purple Knights fell to 3-13.
Game One
After two scoreless innings, the Chargers took the lead in the bottom of the third on a single by
Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ), scoring
Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ) from second who walked earlier in the inning. New Haven strengthened their lead in the bottom of the fourth, pushing seven more runs across the plate. After reaching first on a defensive error, Nepi was moved to third before crossing the plate on a single by Angehr. Taking advantage of two more errors by the Purple Knights,
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) tallied three RBI after ripping a two out double down the left field line. New Haven collected their final run of the inning when
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) drove Spivey in on a single up the middle.
The Purple Knights collected their only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when their lead off batter was hit by a pitch. She scored on a double to centerfield, after advancing to second on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lindsey Courturier doubled to right field, advancing to third when Spivey singled through the left side. The game ended when Courturier scored from third on a ground out by
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic).
New Haven pitcher
Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) collected the win, improving her record to 6-5. She gave up only one hit and one run, facing twenty batters and striking out six.
Game 2
The Chargers came back strong in game two of the doubleheader. In the first inning,
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) lead off with a double to left center. Francisco advanced to third on a single by Angehr, scoring on a wild pitch. Courturier collected an RBI on a single to center field, scoring Angehr who had advanced to third on the wild pitch.
In the bottom of the third, Courturier led off the inning with a double to left center. Freshman
Sadie Redman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) collected her second homerun of the season, scoring
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) who reached first on a defenseive error and
Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) who reached the bases on a fielders choice. In the fourth inning the Chargers answered back, pushing four more runs across the plate.
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) collected an infield single, advancing to second on a stolen base. Dianno scored on a single hit by Francisco while Angehr added to the lead when she drove a triple to right center. Later in the inning, freshman
Ashley Calise (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old-Bethpage JFK) drove in the Charger's final runs of the game when she collected two RBI on a double to right center.
Courturier led the Chargers at the plate, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI. Angehr also had a solid day on offense, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) pitched the 11-0 shutout, striking out nine of 16 batters faced. She gave up no hits in the game and posted only one walk. Her record improves to 7-6 on the season.
