BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference double header Saturday afternoon when they hosted Merrimack College. The Chargers fell in the opening game 1-2, answering back in the second game to defeat the Warriors 5-3. New Haven’s record moved to 21-17 overall while Merrimack College moved to 13-18.
Game One
The Chargers took the early lead in the first game when
Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) slammed a leadoff homerun. The game remained scoreless through the fourth until the Warriors answered back with a two RBI homerun in the top of the fifth. Neither team was able to score for the rest of the game.
Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) suffered the loss for the Chargers after pitching a complete game. She faced 26 batters, allowed only two runs on six hits and struck out seven. With the loss, her record falls to 7-9 on the season.
Game Two
The Warriors jumped to an early lead in the second game, scoring one run in the top of the first inning on two hits. After holding the Chargers through the first, Merrimack pushed another run across the plate in the top of the second. They scored their only other run of the game in the top of the third inning.
The Chargers came back fighting at the plate in the bottom of the third inning.
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) collected the first RBI for New Haven, scoring Angehr on a ground out to second base.
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) also collected an RBI, scoring Lindsey Courturier from third base on a double down the right field line. The Chargers took the lead when
Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ) drove in two runs on a single through the right side. The Warriors were unable to regain the lead, falling to New Haven 5-3.
Nepi led the Chargers at the plate, going 1-for-2 in the game and tallied two go-ahead RBI.
Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) collected the win for the Chargers in the victory. She faced 29 batters in seven innings pitched, giving up six hits and three runs with five strikeouts. With the win, Wesche improves to 12-8 on the season.
