BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team split a twin bill with nationally ranked No. 18 Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon at the UNH Softball Field. The Chargers won the first game 4-2 and the Owls rebounded with a 7-0 victory in the nightcap. The Chargers moved to 23-19 overall and 13-13 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Southern Connecticut State now stands at 34-6 on the season.
Game One
After going down 0-1 in the top of the first inning, New Haven's
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a RBI-single up the middle. The Chargers took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with two runs off two hits and one SCSU error.
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) opened the inning with a double to left field. Two batters later,
Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) reached on a error and pinch-runner
Melanie Mayfield (Durham, N.C./Riverside) scored the go-ahead run for UNH. After Angehr stole second,
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) laced a two-out RBI-single to left center and gave New Haven a two-run lead, 3-1.
SCSU brought the gap back within one run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Chargers earned back the two-run cushion in the bottom of the sixth inning. Angehr drove in the Chargers fourth run with a double down the left field line, scoring
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy). The Owls managed one base runner in the top of the seventh inning, but a foul out ended the inning and secured the two-run victory for UNH.
With four full innings,
Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) won her 13th game of the season. She struck out two and gave up just one earned run.
Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and
Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) both entered in relief and combined for three scoreless innings, including three strikeouts from Malloy.
At the plate, Fisher led the team with two hits and one RBI, while Angehr and Francisco both added a hit, run and RBI. Dianno also went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored.
Game Two
Southern Connecticut came out the gate and took a quick lead in game two. The Owls tallied four runs to open the game off six hits and one UNH error. The Chargers left six runners on base throughout the next seven innings and could not produce a run. UNH left two on base in the fifth and sixth innings, including two in scoring position.
The Owls added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning to improve their lead to 7-0.
Wesche suffered the loss in game two, allowing four runs in the first inning. Tricinelli pitched well in five 2/3 relief innings, while Malloy closed out the final 2/3 inning.
The Chargers struggled at the plate, grabbing just four hits. Sophomore
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) led the way with two hits in three at-bats.
