BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Dominican College 8-1 in a non-conference match-up Wednesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The Chargers improved to 16-13-1 overall, while Dominican dropped to 17-21 on the season.
In the bottom of the second inning, Dominican opened scoring with an unearned run off a throwing error. Dominican held on to the lead until the bottom of the fifth inning when
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) hit a bases clearing three-RBI triple to right center, giving UNH a 3-1 lead.
New Havne held a two-run lead through the sixth inning and added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) registered a two-RBI single through the left side, putting the Chargers ahead 5-1. On inning later, New Haven scored three runs off three hits and took a commanding 8-1 lead headed into the ninth inning.
Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran) scored off a wild pitch and
Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) drove in a pair of runs with a double to left field.
Closing pitcher
Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) came into the game in the top of the ninth and sealed the victory for the Chargers.
Junior right fielder
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) led the Chargers with three RBI, two runs and one hit.
Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) both tabbed two RBI as well.
Starting right hander
Derek Drag (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt / Central Conn. St.) recorded his first win of the season in five innings. He struck out three, while allowing four hits and no earned runs.
Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) struck out four batters in two innings, while
Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and
Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) combined for three strikeouts in the final two innings.
