Softball Wins Doubleheader at Stonehill

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 EASTON, Mass. - The University of New Haven softball team swept a pair of games at Stonehill College on Thursday afternoon. The Chargers took the opening game 5-2 and rebounded with a trio of game-winning homeruns in the nightcap to complete the sweep, 4-2. New Haven improved to 25-19 overall and 15-13 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the two wins. The Skyhawks dropped to 22-14 overall and 15-13 in conference play.

Game One
Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) opened the game with a single through the left side before Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) stepped to the plate with one out. The third baseman then hammered a two-RBI homerun over the fence in left center and gave the Chargers an early 2-0 lead. The Skyhawks added one run off three hits in the bottom of the second inning to cut New Haven's lead to one run.

Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) improved the Chargers lead to 3-1 in the top of the third inning. She singled to left field and drove in Couturier from third base for the two-run lead. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Chargers scored their final two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) drove in one run and another scored off an error by the left fielder as UNH went ahead 5-1. Stonehill led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun over the left field fence to cut the difference to three.

The Skyhawks tabbed three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, but stranded two runners on base and three runs behind. The Chargers retired the side in the bottom of the seventh and secured the 5-2 victory.

Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) secured her 15th win of the season on the mound. She threw the complete game and three strikeouts. The Oxford, Conn. native allowed 13 hits and one earned run.

Couturier went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs to lead the Chargers' bats. Fisher also went 3-for-4 with two RBI at the plate in the opening game.

Game Two
Game two was a pitching and defensive game through the first four innings, but scoring came alive in the fifth inning. Stonehill tallied three hits and combined with one UNH error scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. New Haven rallied with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and took its first lead of the game.

UNH opened the inning with back-to-back strikeouts, while Angehr sparked a Charger rally with a two-out homerun to center field. Francisco then stepped to the plate and evened the score at 2-2 with another solo homerun over the left center fence. Couturier followed with a single down the right field line, while Fisher completed the three-homerun inning with a blast over the right center fence to give the Chargers a 4-2 lead.

The Skyhawks put runners on base in each of the final two innings, but New Haven held on to the two run lead and sealed a two run victory.

Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) earned the victory with six strikeouts and and two runs allowed. Offensively, the Chargers struggled in each inning, except the sixth. UNH's four hits all came in the fourth from Angehr, Francisco, Couturier and Fisher.
