BOX SCORE 2 WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven softball team swept a pair of games at Bentley College on Friday afternoon. The Chargers took the opening game 5-2 and rebounded with a 7-0 victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep. New Haven improved to 27-19 overall and 17-13 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the two wins. The Falcons dropped to 8-28 overall and 6-22 in conference play.
Game One
Bentley took the early lead in the game, scoring one run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Chargers answered back in the top of the second with two runs to take the lead.
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) started the inning off with a double to center field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock).
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) drove in the first run when she singled to left field. The second run was scored by
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) on a bases loaded walk.
The game remained scoreless through the sixth inning until Bentley tied the game on a triple to center field. The Chargers regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning to secure their victory.
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) led the charge in the inning with a three RBI triple, scoring
Amy Nepi (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth ) who had reached on an error,
Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) who had walked earlier in the inning, and Dianno who had singled. The falcons were unable to regain the lead.
Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) collected the win in the 5-2 victory, pitching all seven inning with two runs on seven hits. With the win, her record improves to 16-9 on the season.
Francisco led the Chargers at the plate in game one, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Game Two
New Haven tallied the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning to jump to an early lead. Angehr started the inning with a single to left field, scoring on a double to center off the bat of
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional). Couturier advanced to third on a passed ball and crossed the plate on a single by
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic).
The game remained scoreless until New Haven collected another run in the top of the fourth.
Melanie Mayfield (Durham, N.C./Riverside), pinch running for
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) in the inning, scored on a single to short stop by Dianno. The Chargers collected their final runs in the game in the top of the fifth inning. New Haven collected their first run of the inning on another bases loaded walk before Childs collected two RBI on a single to left field. The Falcons were unable to tally any runs in the shutout.
Childs had a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI.
Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) received the win in the 7-0 shutout, giving up only two hits and striking out seven. With the victory, her record improves to 9-9.
