Baseball Falls One Run Short at Pace, 2-3

BOX SCORE PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game 2-3 at Pace University Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Chargers dropped to 19-15-1 overall and 6-7-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division. The Setters improved to 24-16 overall and 12-2 in divisional play.

The Chargers left one runner on base in each of the first three innings and two in the fourth inning, but could not manage a run. The Setters stranded five runners on base in the first four inning, but also could not bring a run across the plate. Pace scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Setters scored the game's first run off a bases loaded walk, while a bases loaded double down the left field line scored the second and third runs for the Setters.

New Haven answered in the top of the sixth inning with two runs off four hits. Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) drove in the first run with a single to center field. Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) scored the first run, cutting Pace's lead to two runs. The Chargers' next batter, Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) drove in the second run for UNH with a double to right center. Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) cut the Setter's lead to 3-2.

The Setters left two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, while the Chargers left two runners on base in the top of the ninth inning. Neither team registered a run and UNH suffered the one-run loss.

Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) tallied two hits in four at-bats. Romanelli and DeMorais both went 1-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

On the mound, Derek Drag (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt / Central Conn. St.) suffered his first loss of the season. He threw four 1/3 innings with one strikeout and only two hits. Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) threw the final three 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and two hits.
