Softball Earns Big 8-3 Win in NE-10 Tournament, Advances to Play Le Moyne

BOX SCORE NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The seventh seeded University of New Haven softball team defeated third seeded Assumption College 8-3 Friday afternoon in the second round of the Northeast-10 Conference Softball Championship tournament at Southern Connecticut State University. With the win, the Chargers advance in the winners bracket and take on fourth-seeded Le Moyne College Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.

The Chargers improved to 29-18 on the season, while the Greyhounds dropped to 29-16 overall.

The Chargers opening scoring in the top of the second inning with a Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) single to right field. The hit drove in Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) off a fielding error by the right fielder. Senior Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) added to the Chargers lead with a hit that traveled just over the third base bag and carried down the left field. The double drove in two runs and put New Haven adead 3-0.

In the bottom of the second, Assumption rallied with two outs and two scored off a single up the middle to bring the score within one, 3-2. The entire third and fourth innings were scoreless, but the Charger bats rallied once again in the fifth.

Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) led off the fifth with a single through the left side, while Spivey stepped to the plate and hit a two-run homerun over the fence in left center field. The hit gave UNH a 5-2 lead. Sadie Redman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) followed with another single through the left side before Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) hit the second two-run homerun of the inning to left center and gave UNH a comfortable 7-2 lead.

The Greyhounds added one more in the bottom of the fifth inning, while Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) drove in the Chargers' final run in the top of the seventh inning.

Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) earned the win for New Haven in six full innings pitched. She threw five strikeouts and allowed four hits in the win. Spivey led the UNH bats with two hits, two RBIs and two runs in two at-bats. Angehr added two hits, two RBIs and one run in three at-bats. Childs went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run as well.

The winner of Saturday's first game will advance straight to the championship series, while the loser will play a 4 p.m. game against the winner of Friday's game seven, either No. 1 Southern Connecticut or No. 3 Assumption.
