BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team dropped a pair of games in the Northeast-10 Conference Softball Championship tournament on Saturday and were eliminated from the championship tournament. The seventh seed Chargers fell 1-5 to fourth seed Le Moyne College in the opening game of the day. UNH then lost 3-11 in the elimination game to third seed Assumption College.

New Haven dropped to 29-21 on the season with the pair of losses.

Game One (vs. Le Moyne)
The Dolphins opened scoring in the Chargers first game of the day. They scored four runs off four hits and two UNH errors to take the lead. Le Moyne added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with another run off one hit and one UNH error.

One of New Haven's four hits in the game, came in the top of the sixth inning when Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) drove in Chargers' only run of the game with a homerun over the fence in center field. Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) opened the seventh inning with a single to put the lead off runner on base, but the Dolphins posted three-straight outs and continued play into the winners bracket.

Spivey went 2-for-3 in the game, while Angehr and Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) each posted one hit. In the circle, three Chargers pitched throughout the game. Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) suffered the loss in on 1/3 innings, while Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) pitched a majority of the game with two 2/3 innings pitched.

Game Two (vs. Assumption)
In the elimination game of the day, the Chargers' bats struggled and defensively the Chargers could not get on track. The Chargers took the first lead of the game when Francisco hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning. The Greyhounds rallied in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. The Greyhounds scored four-straight runs, including three unearned runs, in the third inning to take their first lead of the game. Assumption also scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with four hits and one error by the Chargers. The Greyhounds held on to a 9-2 lead after four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, New Haven's Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) drove in the third run for UNH. She singled to left field and drove in Angehr from second base. Assumption scored the final runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run homerun over the left field fence. UNH left two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell short by a final score of 11-3.

Francisco and Couturier posted the only two hits for the Chargers in the game. Francisco drove in two, scored one run and also earned a pair of walks. Malloy suffered the loss in the circle in three 1/3 innings pitched. Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) also pitched in the final four innings for the Chargers.

New Haven will await the NCAA Division II Softball Championship field announcement to see if its season will continue. Ranked eighth in the most recent poll, the Chargers would have earned the last spot in the tournament last week, but Assumption and Le Moyne were not ranked in the top eight and will likely bump the Chargers out of contention. The NCAA will officially announce the field of 64 teams with selection show on Monday, April 30 at 10 a.m. Visit www.NCAA.com to watch the selection show live online.
