BOX SCORE 2 ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at The College of Saint Rose Tuesday afternoon in Albany. The Golden Knights took the opening game 8-3, while the Chargers took the nightcap 4-1. The Chargers moved to 15-13 overall and 7-7 in NE-10 play, while the Golden Knights now stand at 9-18 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
Game One
In the first game of the doubleheader, Saint Rose jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. New Haven then scored its first run in the top of the third inning when
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) hit a groundout RBI to score
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ).
The Golden Knights added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. New Haven scored another run off a
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to cut the St. Rose lead to two. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Golden Knights improved their lead with four more runs. In the top of the seventh inning, Spivey drove in another run with a RBI-double to right center. The seventh inning rally stalled their and the Chargers suffered the five-run loss.
Spivey went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) went 2-for-3 at the dish. Pitcher
Kelsey Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) suffered the loss in four full innings pitched.
Game Two
New Haven immediated scored a pair of runs in the nightcap. Francisco drove in the first run in the top of the first inning, while Couturier scored the second run of the inning off a wild pitch by the Golden Knights. In the top of the second inning,
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) scored the third Charger run off another Golden Knights wild pitch. New Haven kept the runs coming in the top of the third inning when Fisher drove in Francisco with a double down the left field line.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Golden Knights scored their only run of the game off a UNH wild pitch. Saint Rose stranded two runners on base in the first three innings, but responded in the fourth to cut New Haven's lead to 4-1. Neither team managed a run in the final three innings and the Chargers took a 4-1 victory.
Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run. Francisco went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run in the nightcap.
Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) earned her ninth win of the season in the complete game victory. She struckout eight batters and allowed four hits.
