Softball Sweeps C.W. Post at UNH Softball Field

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team won two regional games Wednesday afternoon against C.W. Post at the UNH Softball Field. The Chargers took the opening game 6-5 in come-from-behind fashion, while sealing the sweep with a 2-1 eight-inning victory in game two. With the two wins, New Haven improved to 17-13 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 21-13 on the season.

Game One
C.W. Post opened the first game with a quick four runs in the top of the first inning. The Pioneers scored off four hits and two UNH errors in the first. The second and third innings were scoreless at the UNH Softball Field. New Haven answered in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sadie Redman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) hit a RBI-single to left field and score Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) to begin the UNH scoring rally in the fourth. Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) followed with a two-RBI single to left field to bring New Haven within one score, 3-4.

New Haven followed with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) evened the score at 4-4 with a RBI-double down the left field line and score Brandy Diano. Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) then hit a RBI-single to right field to give the Chargers their first lead of the game. Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) drove in the Chargers final and eventually the game-winning run with a RBI-single to left field.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Pioneers scored one run off two hits to bring the score within one, 6-5. In the top of the seventh inning, the Pioneers' lead off batter earned a base, but three-straight outs sealed the Chargers opening game victory.

Childs went 1-for-3 with two RBI in the opening game. Redman added one RBI, one run and went 1-for-2 at the plate. Angehr went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run as well.

Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) earned the win for UNH in six 2/3 innings. She allowed one earned run and five hits.

Game Two
C.W. Post again opened the second game with a run in the top of the first inning. The Pioneers would through the bottom of the fifth inning when the Chargers evened the score at 1-1. Both teams went scoreless through the second, third and fourth innings. The Chargers first run was scored from third by Redman off a wild pitch which got away from the Pioneers' catcher.

With the score tied at 1-1, both teams stranded runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings. The Chargers left two on base each inning, while C.W. Post left one on base. New Haven's game-winning walk-off hit and run came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Spivey led off the inning with a single to left field and Fisher advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Redman then stepped to the plate and laced a RBI-double down the left field line to complete the Charger sweep.

Redman went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run to lead the Chargers in game two. Spivey went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) improved to 10-6 on the season as the winning pitcher for UNH. She struck out four and allowed one run.

New Haven returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Friday, April 6 when it travels to Manchester, N.H. for a doubleheader against Saint Anselm College. The games against the Hawks will take place at the campus of Southern New Hampshire University. New Haven also takes on SNHU on Saturday, April 7 in another NE-10 doubleheader in Manchester, N.H.
