Baseball Splits Doubleheader with River Hawks

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 LOWELL, Mass. - The University of New Haven baseball team split a doubleheader Friday afternoon at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. New Haven fell 4-7 to the River Hawks in the opening game and rebounded with an 11-4 victory in the nightcap. The Chargers moved to 14-6-1 overall, while the River Hawks moved to 15-11-1 on the season.

Game One
New Haven scored the first four runs in the first game Saturday. UNH tallied one in the first and another three runs in the four inning to take a 4-0 lead. The River Hawks would rally in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings to record seven-straight runs and take a 7-4 decision.

Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ), Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) and Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) each drove in runs in the game. Clout, Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), Brendan O'Reilly and Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) each recorded runs in the loss.

Henry Hirsch (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) pitched four 2/3 innings and suffered the loss. He allowed five hits and five runs. Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) appeared in relief and threw the final three 1/3 innings. He threw five strikeouts and gave up four hits.

Game Two
New Haven again got on the board early in the nightcap. The Chargers scored two in the top of the second and third innings and took a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning off a RBI-single to center field from Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton). The River Hawks cut the lead back to three after two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but New Haven answered.

The Chargers rallied with five runs in the top of the fifth inning and took a commanding 10-2 lead after the inning. In the fifth, Kyle Pettoruto (Andover, Mass./St. John's Prep ) hit a double down the left field line and drove in a pair of runs for the Chargers eight-run lead. Lowell added one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the score to 10-3. The team's then exchanged run in the eighth and ninth innings to bring the final score to 11-4.

Carr, Johnson, Pettoruto and Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) each drove in two runs in the game. Collett went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and one run, while Carr went 2-for-6 with two RBI and one run. Brockett went 1-for-2 at the plate with three runs.

On the mound, Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) put together an impressive eight-inning victory. The sophomore three eight strikeouts and allowed three earned runs in his second win of the season. Derek Drag (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt / Central Conn. St.) threw the final inning and struck out three batters.
