BOX SCORE 2 MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven softball team won two NE-10 Conference games Friday afternoon against Saint Anselm in Manchester, N.H. The Chargers took the opening game 2-1in eight innings while sealing the sweep with another 2-1 eighth inning victory in game two. With the two wins, New Haven improved to 19-13 overall, while the Hawks fell to 11-17 on the season.
Game One
The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when freshman
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) put the Charger’s ahead, putting one over the fence in left center. The Hawks answered back in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying up the game on a ground out to the pitcher.
In the top of the eighth,
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) started off the inning with a single to right center. Entering as a pinch runner,
Melanie Mayfield (Durham, N.C./Riverside) scored on a single hit by
Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) to jump into the lead. New Haven managed to hold the Hawks and took the first game 2-1.
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) and
Sadie Redman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) both went 2-for-4 at the plate in the first game.
Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn./Naugatuck) collected the win for the Chargers, pitching eight complete innings. She faced 32 batters, allowed six hits, one run and collected three strikeouts. Her record improves to 11-6 with the win.
Game Two
The Hawks took the early lead in the second game, scoring the runner from third on a throw down to second. New Haven battled back in the top of the third inning, powered by a homerun by
Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue ) over the left field fence.
The game remained tied through seven innings, forcing an extra inning victory for the Chargers. Couturier carried the Chargers into the lead, slamming the second homerun of the game over the fence. The Hawks were unable to answer back in the bottom of the inning.
Angehr went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Spivey also added two hits.
Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) pitched a complete game and collected her second win of the season. She faced 28 batters, striking out five and allowing four hits.
