BOX SCORE 2 RINDGE, N.H. - The fourth seed University of New Haven baseball team suffered a pair of losses Friday in the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Championship tournament and were eliminated from the tournament. The Chargers also concluded the season with a 25-19-1 overall record in 2012. The Chargers dropped the first game of the afternoon in a 5-6 heart-breaker to Franklin Pierce University. UNH faced Le Moyne College in the nightcap and fell 4-10 to the Dolphins.
Game One vs. Franklin Pierce
Sophomore second baseman
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) led the Chargers with two hits in three at-bats. He added one RBI and one run to his totals.
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) went 2-for-5 at the plate, while five others also record hits.
On the mound,
John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) went six full inning for UNH in the start. He thew two strikeouts, gave up six hits and three runs.
Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) threw two full innings in relief and gave up two earned runs with three strikeouts.
In their second-straight game, the Chargers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) led off the game with a double to left field and
Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) advanced him to third base with a ground out to shortstop.
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) then stepped to the plate and drove in the Chargers first run with another ground out to shortstop. In the bottom of the inning, the Ravens loaded the bases with three hits and one out. The Chargers managed to keep the lead as

Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) turned a double play to end the inning with no runs scoring.
In the sencond, Franklin Pierce retired the Chargers' side and the Ravens stepped to the plate in the bottom of the inning. With a leadoff homerun, the Ravens evened the score at 1-1 heading into the third.
Brendan O'Reilly tapped another leadoff double for UNH and Clout advanced the runner with a grounder to second base. Carr gave the Chargers another lead with a one-out RBI single down the right field line.
After a scoreless bottom of the third and fourth innings, the Ravens added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run homerun over the fence in left center gave the Ravens their first lead of the game, 3-2. Six-straight outs in the sixth inning, took the game to the seventh with Franklin Pierce ahead by one.
In the top of the seventh, UNH tied the game off an O'Reilly ground out RBI to second base.
Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) scored on the play and evened the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh, the Ravens opened the inning with back-to-back singles, while a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. Franklin Pierce's next batter walked to load the bases with one out. The Charger defense then stepped up and turned a 5-4-3 double play to hold the game at 3-3.
The Chargers added another pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Johnson drove in Brockett with a with a one-out single to right center, while Romanelli drove in Johnson with a two-out double to left center. The Chargers regained the lead, 5-3 headed into the bottom of the eighth. The Ravens managed one hit, but
Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) struckout three batters and the Chargers held on to a two-run lead into the ninth.
UNH left one runner on third base in the top of the final inning, while the Ravens stepped to the plate trailing by two. Franklin Pierce loaded the bases with no outs and
Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) entered the game. The right hander struckout the first batter he faced, but the Ravens rallied with one out. Zach Mathieu hit a bases loaded double down the left field line and drove in two runs. A fielding error on the play scored the game-winning walk-off victory for the Ravens.
Game Two vs. Le Moyne
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) and
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) led the Charger bats going 2-for-4 in the nightcap. Johnson drove in one run, while
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) added two hits and one run as well.
On the mound,
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) suffered the loss with two relief innings.
Derek Drag (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt / Central Conn. St.) started the game and went three 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and no earned runs. Seniors
Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) and
Mike Aquilino (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) each chipped in with one 1/3 innings each.
In the top of the second inning, New Haven scored the game's first run when Brendan O'Reilly knocked a double to left field to score Buckley. With one hit and two UNH errors in the bottom of the inning, Le Moyne answered with one run as well.
In the third inning, Johnson hit a one-out double to right center and scored
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) from first base, giving the Chargers a 2-1 lead midway through the third inning. UNH held on to the one-run lead through the bottom of the fifth inning. Le Moyne scored one run off one hit and one error in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at 2-2.
Three outs and one hit in the top of the sixth for UNH sent the game to the bottom of the sixth tied at 2-2. The Dolphins then capitalized with three runs off one hit and one UNH error to take a 5-2 lead. The Chargers were retired in the top of the seventh inning, while the Dolphins added another five runs off six hits and one error in the bottom of the seventh. Le Moyne took a commanding 10-2 lead with two innings left.
The Chargers left two runners on base in the top of the eighth and stranded two Le Moyne runners on base in the bottom of the inning. The Chargers then loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth. A fly out to left field put the Dophins one out away from the win with the bases loaded. Buckley and
Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran) plated a pair of runs for UNH before the Dolphins tallied the final out of the game and the six-run victory, 10-4.
