Setters Outlast Chargers in Home Finale, 1-0

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team suffered a 0-1 loss to Pace University Wednesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game at Frank Vieira Field. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 22-16-1 overall and 9-8-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division. The Setters improved to 26-17 overall and 15-3 in divisional play.

Adelphi University also suffered a loss to Southern Connecticut State Wednesday afternoon and the Chargers now stand a half game out of the fourth and final spot of the NE-10 Southwest Division playoffs. The Chargers and Panthers play a three-game series to conclude the regular season this weekend and the series winner will earn the fourth and final spot in the division.

The Chargers tallied just two hits in the game. Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) recorded the first hit of the game for UNH with a one-out triple to deep left center field in the bottom of the second inning. The sophomore barely beat the throw to third base as he stretched out for the triple.

New Haven's defense played one of its best games of the season through the next six innings. The Setters put down 12 hits and the Chargers played error-free defense. In the top of the fifth inning, Brendon O'Reilly gunned down a runner at home plate with a rocket from center field, keeping the score tied at 0-0.

The Setters only run came in the top of the eighth inning when they recorded two hits. After a leadoff single and a stolen base, Pace hit the game-winning double to center field and drove in the game's only run.

New Haven's only other hit came in the bottom of the ninth inning when Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) dropped a single in left field with one out. A strikeout and ground out ended the Chargers' chances.

Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched eight complete innings with five strikeouts and just one run. He allowed 12 hits and didn't walk a single batter. Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) threw one inning in relief and struck out one batter.

Johnson and Carr led the UNH offense with one hit each.

New Haven returns to action in Garden City, N.Y. tomorrow, Thursday, May 3 for the first of a three-game series with Adelphi University. Game time is set for 12 p.m. Stay posted to www.NewHavenChargers.com for complete coverage.
