BOX SCORE PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - University of New Haven freshman left hander
Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits, to lead the Charger baseball team to a 6-0 victory over Pace University in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Championship tournament. The Chargers improved to 25-17-1 on the season, while the Setters concluded their season with a 29-19 overall mark.
Royer made his third collegiate start and record his first complete game shutout. He threw four strikeouts, allowed just three hits and walked just two batters.
Leadoff hitter
Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) led the Chargers' offense with three hits in five at-bats. The junior scored three runs and drove in two more in the win. Sophomore
Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) added two hits, one RBI and one run as well.
With a leadoff single to left field on the game's first pitch, Clout set the tone early for the Chargers.
Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) then loaded the bases for
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton). The sophomore hit a sacrifice fly to center field and scored the Chargers go-ahead run.
The Chargers next three runs came in the top of the fourth inning when Clout drove in two with a double to left field and Carr drove in the fourth run with a single to center field. After two outs opened the inning, DeMorais singled to the shortstop and Brendan O'Reilly earned a base on balls. Both scored on Clout's double, while Clout scored from second on Carr's single.
New Haven's pitching and defense continued their excellent play and retired the side in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the top of the seventh, DeMorais drove in the Chargers' fifth run with a two-out single to center field which drove in
Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) from second base. In the top of the eighth inning, the Chargers loaded the bases with one out and
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) stepped to the plate. The sophomore walked in the Chargers' sixth and final run of the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, Royer threw two more strikeouts and the side was retired as well. In the bottom of the final inning, the Setters managed one hit with two outs, but a routine grounder to third base ended the inning and sealed the opening round upset for the Chargers.
