BOX SCORE PUEBLO, Colo. – Three players with double-digit kills guided the University of New Haven women’s volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Cameron on Friday evening at the ThunderWolves Classic hosted by Colorado State-Pueblo.
Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) posted a match-high 13 kills for the Chargers, and
Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) notched a double-double.
New Haven, which swept Missouri Southern State earlier in the day, opens its 2012 campaign at 2-0. The Aggies fall back to even at 3-3 this season. The Chargers took the match by set scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21.
Cannady hit .440 in the match (13-2-25) and added a match-best five blocks to her baker’s dozen in kills. Candelaria’s double-double consisted of 11 kills and 10 digs; she was nearly joined by freshman
Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty), who tallied 12 kills while hitting .500 (12-2-20) and collecting nine digs.
As a team, the Chargers hit .305 (50-18-105).
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) helped that cause with a .375 clip (8-2-16). Cameron was limited to a .140 attack percentage (34-18-114) by a New Haven defense that garnered five blocks and led the Aggies in digs, 50-35.
Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) doled out 44 assists in the three-set match. The sophomore setter added a kill of her own, five digs and had a hand in two blocks.
Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) led the Charger defense with 17 digs, while
Ashley Gomez (El Paso, Texas/Ysleta) contributed six from the back row. Gomez and Candelaria each landed a service ace in the match.
The contest consisted of 20 tie scores – half of which came in the final frame – and eight lead changes. However, the Chargers only once trailed beyond the nine-point mark, as Cameron was the first team to 20 points in the tightly-contested third set.
New Haven closes out action at the ThunderWolves Classic tomorrow with matches against Wayland Baptist (11 a.m. ET) and Montana State-Billings (3 p.m. ET). The home slate opens on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. against the New York Institute of Technology.
