BOX SCORE ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team saw its 2013 season come to a close on Friday with a 1-0 loss at top-seeded and No. 4 nationally-ranked Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Championship Semifinal matchup. The fifth-seeded Chargers end the campaign at 11-5-3.
Unbeaten Saint Rose improves to 18-0-2 and will host the winner of the Adelphi at American International match – slated for 7 p.m. tonight in Springfield – in the NE-10 Championship Match on Sunday.
The contest's lone goal came in the 15th minute. The Golden Knights were awarded a free kick from 20 yards out after the whistle blew for a Chargers' handball. Sydney Bond quick-touched the try over to Meeghan Arno, who blasted the ball toward the top right corner.
Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) elevated, extended and got a piece of the ball, but it continues its path into the back of the net.
Purchla made four saves to maintain the one-goal deficit, but the Chargers did not manage a shot on goal against Saint Rose, which has only ceded three goals this fall. New Haven was outshot, 8-6, and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The 2013 Chargers began the fall with a program-record eight-match unbeaten streak and won the first Northeast-10 postseason match in team history on Tuesday with a 5-1 triumph at Merrimack. New Haven has posted a winning record in each of Laura Duncan's four seasons as head coach.
