BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team swept Saint Michael’s College Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader at the UNH Softball Field. The Chargers took game one 4-2, and game two 8-3.
New Haven improved to 10-4, while Saint Michael’s dropped to 0-12.
Game One
In the first inning, the Purple Knights jumped out to a two run lead in West Haven. The Chargers answered back scoring a run in the bottom of the first when
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) drove in
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) with a single to left field. The Chargers evened the game in the bottom of the second when
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) drove in
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) with another single to left field.
The Chargers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning by scoring two runs. Palase drove in
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) with her second RBI of the day to left center.
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) then drove in
Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) with a double to right center.
The Purple Knights were unable to clsoe the gap in the sixth and seventh innings and UNH sealed game one.
In the cirle,
Micah Stonesifer (Archer City, Texas/Archer City / Vernon College) collected her fourth win of the season as she gave up just five hits and two earned runs, while striking out four.
Palase went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) added two hits and one run.
Game Two
New Haven took control of game two immediately as Couturier drove in Gelardi with a double up the middle in the bottom of the first inning.
The Chargers' lead improved in the bottom of the second when
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) hit a RBI double to bring home
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic).
The Purple Knights tied the game in the top of the third inning by scoring a pair of unearned runs. The Chargers regained the lead in the bottom of the third with their third-straight one-run inning. Fisher hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Palase scored the Chargers go-ahead run.
Gelardi hit a homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning and drove in the eventual game-winning runs with the shot over the left field fence. Chamoff scored on the homer after singling earlier in the inning.
Spivey opened the fifth inning for UNH with a leadoff solo homerun to left field. The Chargers continued to load the bases in the inning, but came away with just one run and three runners left on base.
After the side was retired in the top of the sixth, including two strikeouts from
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County), the Chargers added two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. New Haven strung together four hits to produce the two runs. Spivey drove in one run with a double down the right field line, while
Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) singled and drove in Couturier scored.
The Purple Knights added just one run in the seventh, but the Chargers held on for the five-run victory.
King collected her fourth win of the season and first collegiate complete game victory. She allowed just four hits and struck out four.
Gelardi led the UNH bats with three runs and two RBI, while going a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish. Spivey was also perfect, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Fisher was 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run as well.
New Haven returns to action when it travels to cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 27. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
