New Haven Clips Visiting Dominican, 4-3

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team pounded out 11 hits en route to a 4-3 win over visiting Dominican on Monday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. Centerfielder Brendan O’Reilly went 2-for-2 with an RBI and three stolen bases in the victory.

With the win, the UNH Chargers move to 14-5 overall and remain perfect at home at 6-0. The visiting Dominican Chargers dropped to 6-8 in defeat.

O’Reilly – who had a double along with a walk and a sacrifice bunt – was one of three Chargers with two hits. Designated hitter Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) went 2-for-4 with an RBI to run his hitting streak to nine games and left fielder Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Third baseman Brendan Buckley added a triple for the New Haven offense, while catcher Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) had a two-bagger. Nick Nunziato (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, one of four successful sacrifices for the Blue and Gold.

John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) got the start and earned the win on the mound. The right-hander scattered six singles and one walk over six innings, ceding two earned runs while racking up three strikeouts. Melville improves his record to 2-1 after his 98-pitch performance.

Right-hander Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran) bridged the gap with two innings of scoreless relief, and fellow righty Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) shut the door with a scoreless ninth to earn his ninth save of the spring in nine opportunities.

An RBI single for Andrew Camardella put Dominican in front, 1-0, in the top of the first inning, but New Haven rallied to tie the score in its half of the frame. Buckley ripped a one-out, stand-up triple into the right field corner to set the table, and O’Reilly followed with a two-bagger to straight-away centerfield to bring him home and knot the score at 1-1.

UNH took the lead in the third frame. After Cullen led off with a single, the left fielder sped all the way to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) and crossed the plate on an errant throw attempting to nab him taking the extra base. The home team tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Romanelli led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch and came home on a Nunziato sacrifice fly.

Dominican cut into the 3-1 margin with an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but New Haven once again had an answer in the home half of the inning. Clout singled to lead-off, moved into scoring position on a Buckley sacrifice and came home on back-to-back singles by O’Reilly and DeMorais.

The visitors scored again in the top of the sixth inning, trimming the deficit to 4-3 on an RBI single by Leonardo Bravo, but the score would not change again as the bullpens traded zeroes for the remainder of the contest.

New Haven resumes Northeast-10 Southwest Division play tomorrow with a visit from crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State. First pitch from Frank Vieira Field is slated for 3:30 p.m. with New Haven’s Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) and the Owls’ Rocco Cundari penciled in as the probable starters on the mound.
