Softball Falls in Continued Game at SCSU, 7-6, in 12th Inning

BOX SCORE NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team traveled to Southern Connecticut State University Thursday afternoon to finish a suspended game from March 27. The game resumed in the top of the seventh inning and finished in the 12th inning with the Owls earning a walk-off single to take a 7-6 victory.

With the loss, UNH fell to 22-8 overall and 5-3 in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division play. The Owls improved to 19-14 overall and 7-1 in conference divisional play.

In the first portion of the game, played on March 27, 2013, the Chargers and Owls played to a 5-5 tie in the fifth and a 6-6 tie in the sixth. The game was resumed with two outs in the top of the seventh and Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) on second base. She would be left on base as the Owls came to the plate in the final regulation inning. With Micah Stonesifer (Archer City, Texas/Archer City / Vernon College) now pitching for UNH, she walked the opening batter and then struck out three straight to force extra innings.

New Haven put one runner on base in the top of the eighth, but stranded the go-ahead run at first base. Stonesifer continued in the bottom of the eight and tallied two strikouts of the three straight outs.

Both teams then left one runner on base in each of the ninth and 10th innings. In the top of the 10th, base runners were placed at second base to start the inning, but still both teams went scoreless for another two innings. In the top of the 11th, the Chargers had their best scoring opportunity with the bases loaded. The Owls left one runner on base in the bottom of the 11th, while UNH stranded another two in the top of the 12th.

Southern Connecticut State earned the win in the bottom of the 12th when they recorded two hits and the game-winning run crossed the plate with a single down the left field line.

Despite throwing seven strikeouts in five innings, Stonesifer suffered the loss for UNH. She dropped to 8-4 on the season, while not allowing an earned run in the loss.

In total, Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) paced the Chargers' bats with four RBI and three hits in five at bats. Gelardi went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs and three walks.

New Haven returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 13 at Le Moyne College. The NE-10 Southwest Division doubleheader is set to start at 2 p.m. The Dolphins and Chargers will also play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12 p.m.
