Chargers, Dolphins Trade Shutouts in Sunday Split

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team posted a 4-0 win in the nightcap, returning the favor after visiting Le Moyne claimed a 4-0 decision in the opening game of a doubleheader on Sunday at Frank Vieira Field.

Following the split, the Chargers stand at 17-11 overall and 5-4 in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division. Le Moyne, which also won Saturday’s series opener, moves to 12-18 with a 4-4 divisional tally.

Right-hander John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) earned the victory on the mound for New Haven with 7.1 innings of three-hit, shutout ball. He walked one and hit a batter while racking up eight strikeouts. Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran) notched the final five outs to record his second save of the spring.

Offensively, Nick Nunziato (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) were each 2-for-4 with a double in Game 2. Nunziato and Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) each drove in a run, while Nunziato scored two in addition to his pair of stolen bases. Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) also swiped two bags and the Chargers went 9-for-10 on the basepaths in the nightcap and 11-for-12 in the twin bill.

Nunziato and Johnson each doubled in the first game as well.

Game 1
The Dolphins hung single runs on the board in the third, fourth and fifth innings to claim a 3-0 lead in the opening game. The RBI went to Matthew Ciraco, Paul Speicher and Pat Wiese. The visitors tacked on a run on a Vincent Redmond RBI hit in the eighth inning to run the tally to its eventual 4-0 final.

The Chargers managed just three hits off of Le Moyne southpaw Ryan Davis. In addition to two-baggers from Nunziato and Johnson, Brendon Buckley singled off of the left-hander.

Davis (5-2) tossed a complete-game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to out-duel New Haven lefty Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford). Simone ceded six hits and two walks that led to three earned runs over six innings of work. The Chargers’ southpaw struck out three batters and hit one.

Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) finished the outing on the mound for UNH.

Game 2
The nightcap remained scoreless into the fourth frame. A pair of errors opened the door for New Haven as DeMorais reached on a fielding miscue and then moved into scoring position on an errant pickoff attempt. After Cullen moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt, Nunziato’s double to the gap in right centerfield batted him with the game’s first run. After the third Le Moyne error of the inning put runners on the corners, Johnson lofted a sacrifice fly into centerfield to run the margin to 2-0 in favor of the Chargers.

A two-out rally created another New Haven run in the sixth frame. After two quick outs, Nunziato singled up the middle to keep the inning alive and promptly stole second base.  A pitch to the backstop then allowed the shortstop to race all the way around to run the score to 3-0.

The Chargers’ seventh-inning insurance run came from another two-out push. Brendan O’Reilly singled to start the offense with two down and a Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) base-knock on a hit-and-run put runners on the corners.  O’Reilly then crossed the plate on a double-steal, bringing the score to 4-0.

Meanwhile, Melville cruised into the eighth inning and, with two runners on and one out, Lewicki took the ball and induced a pair of line-outs. He then worked around a hit batter in the ninth to close out the shutout victory.

The Chargers continue NE-10 Southwest Division play with a five-game road swing beginning on Tuesday, April 16 at crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State. New Haven returns to the diamond at Frank Vieira Field on Thursday, April 25 for a non-conference meeting with Post.
