BOX SCORE BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. - After pulling ahead 8-7 in the top of the fourth inning, the University of New Haven softball team suffered a 10-9 loss at Pace University Tuesday afternoon. Senior
Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) led the team with three hits, two RBI and two runs in the win.
The Chargers drop to 13-6 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division. The Setters improved to 9-8 overall and 2-5 in the NE-10 Southwest.
The Chargers gave up three runs in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second to go behind 5-0 early in Tuesday's game. New Haven's bats came alive in the top of the third inning and the Chargers scored six runs off five hits to take a one run lead. Gelardi drove in a pair of runs with a homerun and
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) hammered a double to left field, also scoring two.
Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) both drove in runs in the third as well.
Pace responded in the bottom of the third with another two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Setters loaded the bases, but scored just two and left the bases juiced to take a 7-6 lead.
The lead changes continued in the top of the fourth inning when New Haven scored two off a two-out, two RBI homerun from
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional). The junior drove in Gelardi and put UNH ahead 8-7.
The game went scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. The Chargers scored another run when
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) hit a sacrifice fly to right field and drove in
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy). Pace scored two in the bottom of the sixth and evened the game at 9-9. The game-winner run crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Setters taking the one-run victory.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, April 3 at LIU Post. The doubleheader is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
