BOX SCORE ALBANY, N.Y. – After scoring a total of 37 runs in its last three outings, the University of New Haven baseball team crossed the plate just once on Sunday, dropping a Northeast-10 Southwest Division contest to host Saint Rose, 2-1.
Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) picked up the RBI for the Chargers.
The loss, which halts a four-game winning streak, moves New Haven to 20-12 overall and 8-5 in the NE-10 Southwest. The Golden Knights improve to 7-33 with a 3-9 divisional mark. The Chargers swept yesterday's doubleheader, 18-14 and 8-3, to win the three-game season series.
DeMorais’ RBI single was the lone run scored for New Haven. The designated hitter also picked up a stolen base.
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) went 2-for-3 at the dish.
Right-hander
Derek Drag (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt / Central Conn. St.) got the start on the mound, allowing one earned run on one hit, three walks and two wild pitches while striking out three in three innings of work.
Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) took the loss out of the bullpen to fall to 1-3. The southpaw ceded one earned run on four hits, two walks and one hit batter while accumulating two strikeouts in 4.2 inning of work.
Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran) finished the game, getting the only batter he faced to produce a harmless groundout.
The victory went to Saint Rose right-hander Josh Johnson (1-4). Johnson went the distance, allowing one run (none earned) on seven hits, two walks and a wild pitch while racking up eight strikeouts.
The Chargers got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Brendan O’Reilly reached on an error with one out and
Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) followed with a single to left. DeMorais cashed in on the RBI opportunity with a base-hit of his own to give New Haven a 1-0 lead.
Drag went in-and-out of trouble in the bottom of the opening frame. He threw eight straight balls to walk the first two batters he faced and then uncorked a wild pitch to move them both into scoring position. However, the right-hander settled down with a strikeout, groundball back to the pitcher and an inning-ending lineout to Buckley at first to retire the side.
The Chargers were unable to escape a similar situation in the third inning. After a Derek Reed double, a walk issued to Joseph Carcone and a Caleb Gleason sacrifice put runners on second and third with one down, Drag got the second out via a strikeout. However, though Drag got ahead of the next batter, 0-2, en route to an inning-ending strikeout, he uncorked a wild pitch during the at-bat that allowed Reed to race home and knot the game at 1-1.
A Chad Adams sacrifice fly off Royer staked the Golden Knights to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Josh Johnson kept the Chargers’ bats at bay. New Haven had an opportunity to even the score in the top of the eighth inning after a Clout walk and an O’Reilly bunt single to lead off the frame, but the Saint Rose hurler induced a pair of strikeouts and a pop-up to third base to get out of the jam and maintain the one-run advantage.
Andrew Johnson would single with one out in the ninth but was cut down attempting to steal second base as Josh Johnson finished off the complete game to salvage the final game of the series for the home team, 2-1.
The Chargers conclude the road portion of their schedule on Wednesday, April 24 with the pivotal rubber match of a Northeast-10 Southwest Division series at Pace at 3:30 p.m. New Haven wraps up the regular season with a nine-game homestand, beginning with a 3:30 p.m. visit from Post on Thursday, April 25.
