Chargers Sweep Assumption, Clinch NE-10 Postseason Berth with 1-0 Win

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) combined to shutout visiting Assumption for the second consecutive day as the University of New Haven baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Greyhounds with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. A seventh-inning double from Nick Nunziato (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) drove home the game’s only run.

With the sweep, the Chargers improve to 25-12 overall as winners of five straight games and nine of their last 10 contests. New Haven now stands atop the Northeast-10 Southwest Division at 12-5. The Chargers have the same divisional record as Pace but own the tiebreaker after taking two of three meetings from the Setters during the regular season. New Haven officially clinched a berth in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship with today’s triumph.

Assumption dropped to 13-29 on the season and 8-9 in the NE-10 Southwest.

Vilacha spun the first seven innings of the mound to improve to 6-1. The senior right-hander scattered just four singles and one walk while striking out three batters. Jay got the last six outs, including three strikeouts, with only an error with two outs in the ninth marring his perfect outing.

Jay’s appearance resulted in his 12th save of the spring. The Chargers’ closer has now tied the program single-season record for saves set by Mitch Rossi during the 2011 season. Rossi is also the all-time saves leader in Division II history, slamming the door for New Haven on 35 occasions from 2008-11.

The Chargers, who also got a complete shutout from Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) in the nightcap of yesterday’s sweep, have now blanked their opponent on seven occasions this season. Today was Vilacha’s first appearance in a shutout in 2013, while Jay has been a part of three clean sheets for the New Haven pitching staff.

Nunziato’s RBI double was his second hit of the afternoon. The two-bagger knocked home Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont), who also doubled and then stole third in the seventh inning before coming around to score. The Chargers also got hits from Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) and Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity).

Santi Palmer was the hard-luck loser for the Greyhounds. The right-hander allowed the game’s only run and ceded four hits in total in 6.1 innings of work. Dan Bradley finished the game on the mound for Assumption.

The Chargers continue their nine-game homestand and resume Northeast-10 divisional play on Tuesday, April 30 with a 3:30 p.m. visit from Southern Connecticut State. After welcoming LIU Post on Wednesday, the regular season concludes at Frank Vieira Field with a three-game series against NE-10 Southwest foe Adelphi.
